History
The Condition of Indonesian Agriculture
The trend of world community to get back to nature has led to a rapidly grows of organic agriculture products demand in worldwide about 20% per year. Therefore, in 2014 the world market segment toward organic agriculture products will reach up to USD 100 billion (Ditjen BPPHP Deptan, 2001).
On behalf of makes Indonesia as one of the organic food product producers that can fill the world market. The Ministry of Agriculture has established the program “Go Organic 2014”. Indonesian National Standards on Organic Food Systems has been arranged in SNI 01-6729-2002 which contains a guidance about the organic food cultivation ( crop and livestock ) methods , packaging , labeling and certification. The rationale of the organic agriculture program is the government's effort to restore agriculture land that damaged due to excessive use of chemical fertilizers.
The excessive use of chemical fertilizers and exploitation of agricultural land for the last 30 years has reduced the support capacity of farmland. Soil nutrients (food starch) and soil organic materials drained quickly, but only chemical nutrients (chemical fertilizers) added to the soil.
As a result the following conditions occur:
1. The content of soil organic material is only 1 – 2% currently, whereas the ideal is 5%
2. The low soil microbes activity
3. The physical, chemical, and biological characteristic of soil is decreasing
4. The reduces of soil fertility
5. The needs of chemical fertilizers is likely to increase, but not followed by an increase in production
The use of chemicals for herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides by farmers is often conducted without taking any attention on the usage instructions. Our agricultural products contaminated by residues of hazardous chemicals that is very dangerous for health. The remaining chemical residues in the soil causing environmental pollution and damage the balance of soil biota. Therefore, it needed an agricultural system that is able to restore the condition as previous, namely organic agricultural system.
To Aim Indonesian Organic Agriculture
The growing issue in agricultural field shifted from quantity issue to fill the need of food into food quality and safety issue. Both of the issues become the basis of agricultural technology development in the future. Food quality includes flavor, nutrients, and vitamins. Food safety includes eliminating and reducing residual chemicals, herbicides, and pesticides which harmful for the health.
Organic agriculture is an integrated and holistic agricultural production system that optimizes health and productivity of agro-ecosystem naturally. Therefore, it will able to produce enough food and fiber, has good quality and ongoing. The technology that supports to achieve this goal is by equipping bio fertilizer, bio decomposer, bio control, and bioremediation.
